In summer it is easiest to evaluate the health of the tree and do minor trimming or thinning. During the months of November through March, it is the best time for the health of the tree to do the heavier pruning.
Although tree removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary. Removal is recommended when the tree:
– Is dead or dying.
– Is causing an obstruction that is impossible to correct through pruning.
– Is crowding and causing harm to other trees.
– Has root problems.
– If you suspect a tree has become unsafe.
You should only remove 10 to 20 percent of the tree branches from the edge of the canopy. Large trees benefit from removing end portions of limbs between 1 to 4 inches in diameter.
Pruning is used to remove unnecessary branches. Trimming, on the other hand, promotes healthy growth.
